LORRAIN, CLAUDE [Claude Gelee]. Liber Veritatis, or, a Collection of Two Hundred Prints after the Original Designs of Claude le Lorrain. 3 volumes. 300 mezzotint plates after Lorrain by Richard Earlom. Folio, 415x270 mm, first two uniformly bound in tree calf with later rebacking, retaining original spine labels; the third volume, printed later, bound in 1/2 red morocco gilt; about three quarters of the plates quite bright and clean, the remaining with light to moderate foxing as normally encountered, heaviest in Vol. 1; first two volumes lack portrait frontispieces, Volume 3 contains that of Earlom only and with marginal dampstaining to final 10 plates. Ex-collection The Count of Lepell bequeathed to the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett in the Kupferstich-Sammlung der Königliche Museen, Berlin, with royal stamps on title-pages and versos of Volumes 1 & 2, and with their deaccession stamps on title pages. Liber Veritatis (Book of Truth) contains masterly renderings by Richard Earlom of Claude Lorrain's great sketchbook, now in the British Museum. This set contains the scarce third volume issued in 1819. Abbey speaks of "this capital work, a landmark in the history of reproduction master drawings ...
